Definition
Switzerland is not in the EU, but the European Commission recognises it as providing adequate protection. The revised FADP added duties such as privacy by design, breach notification and records of processing.
How it works
The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) supervises compliance. Unlike the GDPR, fines are aimed at responsible individuals, up to 250,000 Swiss francs. Swiss surveillance law, a separate set of rules, decides what providers can be required to log or hand over.
Why it matters
Several privacy services, including Proton, are based in Switzerland and cite it as a selling point. The FADP is part of that story, but read it together with Swiss surveillance law and the provider's own audit record.
